Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkins
The past two weeks, our class has been using their five senses with pumpkins. Here are a few pictures of our busy scientists......
Our scientists used this book to make observations, predictions, and record information on our pumpkins.
Describing the way the seeds felt. This friend said, "slimy!"
We made predictions on the amount of seeds in our pumpkin. Once predictions were made, we grouped the seeds in sets of ten. Our pumpkin had 213 seeds! We used our sense of touch and smell with the pumpkin.

The Five Senses
We enjoyed using our sense of touch with "feely bags." Students wore goggles to cover their eyes and were asked to use describing words as they felt the object in the bag. Students had fun making educated guesses on what was in the bag.

Morning Message
As part of our morning routine, we have a morning message. This is a great way to incorporate phonics skills, high frequency words, the use of turn and talk, and much more. Students eagerly participate and like to share how they knew what was missing in the message. A child in our class asked if he could write the message one morning. We were excited to see what he would write! He now "trains" other friends how to write the message.
Eric Carle Author Study
The class enjoyed listening and responding to : Do you want to be my Friend? To practice our retelling skills, students chose an animal from the book and drew the picture. Then, we put the animals in order and retold the story. We enjoyed learning that this book is one of Eric Carle's favorite books that he wrote because it is about friendship. Even though this book doesn't have many words, it took Eric Carle two years to complete the book. Did you know this book only has 8 words???
Eric Carle Author Study
This week we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by: Eric Carle. In Readers and Writers Workshop, we focused on retelling by incorporating the story vocabulary. We also retold the story by using props and puppets.

Hip Hip Hooray!! It's 100's Day!
Our 100's day began by walking in the room and seeing 100 balloons! What a treat! We made 100's day crowns, 100 piece trail mix, roll & record to 100, created masterpieces out of 100 Legos, hunted for 100 lifesavers in the room, and much more! We ended the day with a Zero the Hero assembly. Mr. Dygan read a book and showed us things that were 100 years old.
